The Energy Storage and Distributed Resources Division (ESDR) works on developing advanced batteries and fuel cells for transportation and stationary energy storage, grid-connected technologies for a cleaner, more reliable, resilient, and cost-effective future, and demand responsive and distributed energy technologies for a dynamic electric grid.
Research +
We work closely with academic, government and industry partners to conduct foundational and applied research that provides the groundwork for the development of transformative new energy technologies in the areas of energy storage and conversion, electrical grid, advanced materials for the energy infrastructure, science of manufacturing and water-energy nexus.

Tech Women at Berkeley Lab

As part of Berkeley Lab's mission to bring science to the world, the Energy Technologies Area is hosting three visiting scientists through the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs TechWomen program.

The goal is to empower, connect and support the next generation of women leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by providing them access and opportunity to advance their careers, pursue their dreams, and become role models for women and girls. Through this program, Berkeley Lab is mentoring a total of six TechWomen lab-wide.

Visiting scientists

TechWomen hosted by the International Energy Studies group (IES) and Building Technology and Urban Systems Division (BTUS), will be at the Lab October 1-26, 2018:

Safiya Aliyu, a renewable energy manager from Nigeria, will be mentored by Reshma Singh, program manager in BTUS, and Stephane dela Rue du Can, assistant leader of the IES group, which is in the Energy Analysis & Environmental Impacts division at ETA.

Nothando Ndlovu, who works in the the renewable energy and energy efficiency field in Zimbabwe, also will be mentored by Singh and de la Rue du Can.

Irina Mun, a civil engineer from Kazakhstan, will be mentored by Hanna Breunig, research scientist in the Sustainable Energy Systems group.
Claire Curtin, program manager in BTUS, will serve as a cultural mentor for the program. The above participants will be joined by other scientists hosted at Berkeley Lab's Computational Research Division and Molecular Foundry, as part of a cohort of about 100 women being hosted by industry mentors across the Bay Area.

There will be a lab-wide event on October 16, 2018, in collaboration with the other host divisions and other host companies from the Bay Area. The event will offer employees a chance to meet these emerging leaders.
